  • The same taste

    I stayed at a youth hostel in Kamakura with some high school friends and spent two days wandering around. I was drawn to Chikaramochiya by its rustic appearance, so I stopped in for the first time in decades. I was happy to see that the taste hadn't changed.　
    A traveling couple asked me if this was famous, and I told them it was delicious, but it was crowded so they left without buying anything.
    I thought, "I don't care if I regret it later!"

    Chikara Mochiya's Fukumen Manju is based on the mask procession at the nearby Goryo Shrine. Although the name Fukumen sounds auspicious, the motifs are a variety of impressive figures, including a Tengu, a lion, an old man, an ogre, a fire-breathing man, a midwife, an Okame, and Fukurokuju. The fact that they made manju out of masks that don't look appetizing is what's so amazing about it! The simple taste of this long-established shop that has been around for over 300 years is great.

    I stop by here when I go to Hasedera Temple. The retro shop is nostalgic and comforting. They are famous for their gyuhi-riki-mochi, but this time I also bought my husband's favorite suama. My husband has tried suama from many stores, and doesn't often praise it, but he said the suama from this store is delicious. The expiration date is the same day, but I think it's because they don't use any additives that it's so delicious.

    There are two types of chikaramochi: mochi with plenty of red bean paste and gyuhi, and since I was on a walk this time, I bought the gyuhi. It's small and easy to carry around, and it's great to eat while walking. Soft and just the right amount of sweetness, the bean paste and gyuhi are exquisite! ︎I want to try another chikara mochi next time~(^^)

    I went there after noon on Monday during the hydrangea season.
    I found it when I was walking from Goryo Shrine to the sea!
    I was happy because it was the store I wanted to go to
    Individually wrapped and boxed sweets that last for a long time (forgot the name) are already sold out, so I bought a mochi that looks like Akafuku with red bean paste on it.
    The expiration date is today!
    When I got home and ate it, the bean paste was smooth and the mochi was chewy yet easy to chew.
    Since it is bite-sized, it will be chewy if you put it in your mouth in one bite, so please be careful not to let it get stuck in your throat.
    It was so delicious, and even though it was small, I didn't need dinner for dinner after eating 5 of them.
    The appearance of the old shop is also wonderful.
    This time I bought 10 pieces and konpeito (300 yen), but next time I will choose the one with more!
    And I'd like to eat the sweets of those who were sold out.
