A traditional Japanese craft with over 200 years of history dating back to the end of the Edo period.Parquet" is a technique that makes use of the diverse colors and grain of natural wood and brings together multiple pieces of wood to create beautiful geometric patterns.
In addition to Hamamatsuya, which has inherited the bloodline and techniques of Ishikawa Jinbei, said to be the founder, and where demonstrations are also held, there are numerous workshops and direct sales stores dotted around Hakone and Odawara, centered around Hatajuku, the birthplace of the craft.
Currently, there are four workshops in Hatajuku, including Hamamatsuya, where traditional craftsmen and artisans work hard to create works while carrying on traditions.
...What are the "zuku" and "muku" techniques in marquetry? ...
* Zuku pasting (Zuku)
This technique is the origin of Hakone marquetry, in which patterns thinly carved with a special plane are pasted onto the outside of wooden products such as small boxes. The thickness of the zuku is very thin, about 0.15mm to 0.2mm, and it can only be achieved by a skilled craftsman. Popular products include secret boxes and trinket boxes.
* Solid wood construction
This method involves processing thick parquet wood and then shaping the product as is. The products are durable and easy to use, and come in designs that look great in modern life.
Popular items include teacups and dishes.
