Owakudani specialty"Black egg"
How “black eggs” are made
When eggs are slowly boiled for about 80 minutes in a hot spring pond at about 60 degrees Celsius, the ingredients from the hot spring adhere to the porous shell, turning it black, creating a black-shelled boiled egg. Transfer these blackened eggs to a steamer, steam them at about 100 degrees for about 15 minutes, and it's done! ``Black eggs'' are also sold at the shop below, so you may even see them being transported by a special ropeway.
The ingredients of hot springs are the origin of the legend of extending life.
Owakudani is home to Enmei Jizo, a Jizo statue that is said to have been created by Kobo Daishi during the Heian period to extend life and raise children. There used to be a hot spring pond with black eggs near this Jizo statue, so it was said that eating black eggs in honor of the Jizo statue would extend your life. The number 7 in ``extends life expectancy by 7 years'' is said to be used as an auspicious number such as the Seven Lucky Gods, so the word ``seven years'' came to be used before people knew it.
