Founded in the early Edo period, Toge no Chaya is located along the old Hakone highway. In 2009, the historic thatched roof and earthen floor shop was renovated and reopened.

In the Edo period, there were four teahouses around here, but this is the only one that still exists.

A story handed down at Amazake-chaya: "Amazake-chaya's Washomon"

On the way to Edo with his comrade, Yogoro Kanzaki, a ronin of Ako, was recommended by Yugoro, a horseman, in the mountains of Hakone, but refused. There, Yugoro was cursed, so Yogoro instinctively tried to cut it off with his hand on the sword. However, I drank tears and small things before the important thing and put up with it, wrote an apology at Amazake Chaya, and apologized.
As the days went by, Yugoro's ears also heard a story of vengeance, and it was said that the Ronin at that time knew that he was Kanzaki Yogoro and repented.

Review of Hakone Amazake Chaya

  • The rice cakes are delicious

The mochi are delicious and I always stop by when I come to Hakone.

  • A relaxing spot on the old Hakone road

If you are heading to Hakone (towards Lake Ashi) on the old road, this is the perfect place to relax after completing the Nanamagari. There is ample parking space, and you can also take a restroom break. Amazake-chaya sells rice cakes pounded with a mallet, herbal tea, and best of all, amazake. I've come all the way here to buy some when my child was sick and had a fever. It's reliable amazake.

  • Chikara mochi is delicious, but black bean zenzai is also unusual and delicious.

Coming from the direction of Odawara, it is on the right hand side after passing through Nanamagarizaka on the old Tokaido road. People in the past would have come here to take a break and recover from the fatigue of their journey. The thatched roof, gourd-shaped hearth, and thick beams are all worth seeing, making this a recommended stop-off spot.
From here, it takes about an hour to hike along the cobblestones of the old Tokaido road to Lake Ashi, so why not give it a try?

  • It was very delicious

My trip to Hakone always starts at Amazake-chaya.
The amazake here is additive-free, so it's the only one I can drink, and it's not too sweet, so it's easy to drink and I really like it. The accompanying seasoned butterbur buds (butterbur miso?) are also excellent. I'm glad that the staff remembers me and always greets me. I'm already one of the regular customers.

  • It's always delicious

The amazake here is the real deal. It has a soft texture and is completely different from the strangely pungent amazake you get from other places. It's amazing. I hope they continue to make it forever.

  • It was very delicious

In Hakone, my journey always begins at a traditional teahouse with a thatched roof, where I can enjoy a delicious cup of hot amazake to warm both body and soul.
Even though it had been a while since I last visited, the staff remembered me and spoke to me, which made me happy and surprised. When I go to Hakone again, it will start from here.

  • Healed

I walked along the road, wanting to have the same experience as the Edo period people who crossed Hakone. I was amazed at the physical strength of the Edo period people. I took a rest at the Amazake teahouse along the road, thinking about the people of that time. I was soothed by the sweet sake.

It had a traditional atmosphere and was very nice. The sweet sake was also delicious!

  • It's delicious and warming.

The natural sweetness of the amazake makes it very delicious and warms the body, and when you eat the mochi with it, your stomach is filled and you're very satisfied. The atmosphere of the building is also nice, and you can spend a relaxing time with the big stove, so it's a place I always want to stop by when I go to Hakone.

  • An old place

I stopped in on a cold day, and the smoke from the hearth was rising at a moderate rate, and the low lighting gave off an atmosphere unique to an old-fashioned house, and I could feel the warmth with my eyes. There was also free origami art, and I think it would be an exciting space for foreigners too. It's a really nice teahouse.

  • Amazake-chaya - a place worth visiting even if it's difficult

It is located just past the seven bends of the old highway.
You can take a relaxing break with some hot amazake.

  • Feeling like a traveller in Edo

I was given sweet sake and mochi (rice cakes). I ate them while thinking that they must have been taking a break during their alternate attendance.

  • Thinking back to the Edo period

I enjoyed some sweet sake and chikara-mochi while thinking that Edo travelers must have rested at this teahouse. It was a refreshing moment on a hot summer day.

  • Historical Buildings and Amazake

    "Amasake-chaya" is a 400-year-old thatched-roof teahouse
This shop is also depicted in ukiyo-e prints of the Tokaido
"No rest for travelers," as the saying goes, and we are open all year round.
Amazake is characterized by its natural sweetness without any additives or sugar.
It's also available chilled in the summer.
With the heatwaves continuing day after day, this is the perfect place to escape the heat.

  • Feel like a feudal lord in the Edo period

The delicious sweet sake was the best. The shop only uses natural light to highlight the beauty of the Edo period building, and the glossy wooden tables and chairs make you feel like a feudal lord taking a break during his alternate attendance period.

  • Cool even in summer!

It's cool even on a midsummer morning, like a summer resort!
I've been going to this restaurant since I was a child, and now three generations have been going there.
You can enjoy warm amazake and mochi together, creating a great mood and atmosphere.
It's also great that it's open early in the morning!

  • A hidden spot suddenly appears!?

It was located on a mountain road and the parking lot was spacious. It was a quaint space and very cool even in the middle of summer. The shaved ice was large and especially the strawberry shaved ice was delicious. This was my first time here, but I would like to go again.

  • The atmosphere was great!

The thatched roof gives it a very calming look, and it felt like I was back in the Edo period.
The cold summer amazake had a natural sweetness compared to juice, making it easy to gulp down.

  • delicious

When you want to take a break, drop in and enjoy the sweet sake and sweet treats.
