Hakone Open-Air Museum Masterpiece Collection + Selection by Katsura Noritake
The Hakone Open-Air Museum opened in 1969 as Japan's first outdoor art museum, and will celebrate its 2024th anniversary in 55. To date, it has collected over 2,000 pieces of art.
今回は、そのコレクションの中から近・現代彫刻の優品を選び、時代の流れに沿って展⽰。また、彫刻の森美術館 開館55周年記念「舟越桂 森へ行く日」(本館ギャラリー、2024年7⽉26⽇〜11⽉4⽇)の関連として、⾈越桂とゆかりのある現代作家の作品を選りすぐり、所蔵作品21点(作家14名)、⾈越桂選 出品作品7点(作家5名)を展⽰する。
Katsura Funakoshi
Biography
Born in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture in 1951. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Tokyo Zokei University in 1975. Completed the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in Sculpture in 1977. Residing in London as an overseas artist trainee of the Agency for Cultural Affairs from 1986 to 87. Died on March 2024, 3, at age 29.

The Hakone Open-Air Museum Masterpiece Collection
The exhibition features masterpieces of modern sculpture by artists such as Medardo Rosso, Boccioni, Ogiwara Morie, and Asakura Fumio, as well as works by representative 20th century sculptors such as Brancusi, Giacometti, Yasutake Nigoe, and Kyubei Shimizu.

The exhibition features works by five contemporary artists selected by Katsura Funakoshi for this exhibition. Works by Funakoshi's longtime friend Shunji Miki, fellow professor at Tokyo Zokei University Tomotaka Yasui, Kohei Nawa, who exhibited with him at the Marunouchi Street Gallery, and Atsuhiko Misawa and Hiroshi Sugito, who competed in the "Animal House" exhibition at the Shoto Museum of Art, are also on display. In addition, a special exhibition of "Where the Okapi Lives," a collaborative work by Funakoshi, Misawa, Sugito, and painter Masato Kobayashi, will be on display.
